Wooooooo. I’m very excited for tonight. After an entire weekend of intense acquisition, I finally have a copy of Pan’s Labyrinth to watch. I have heard and read nothing but good things about this movie. I’m even more excited now that I’ve seen The Devil’s Backbone (which writer/director Guillermo del Toro considers to be a sister piece to Pan’s Labyrinth).
The Devil’s Backbone was excellent, and I heartily recommend it. The story takes place at an orphanage in Spain in the 1930’s. The orphanage is haunted by “the one who sighs,” the ghost of a boy who used to live there.

However, I cannot recommend Takashi Miike’s Full Metal Yakuza at all. Dang film made no sense. It was kinda funny, though, in an I-wish-MST3K-would’ve-done-this sort of way.

The final movie that I watched this weekend was Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, the first movie from Chan-wook Park’s so-called “vengeance trilogy.” I watched these movies in a weird order; starting with Oldboy (the 2nd movie in the trilogy), then (Sympathy for) Lady Vengeance (the third), and ending with this one. I really didn’t like this one as much as the other two, and I still think that Oldboy is the “must watch” of the three.
